When analyzing the history of high school in terms of access and retention of young people at this stage of schooling, young black people are protagonists of years of exclusion from the educational system. Therefore, the objective of this study was to carry out a brief discussion using IBGE data from 2023 and the technical note: “Ethnic-racial inequalities in enrollment and completion of high school”, produced by the NonGovernmental Organization (NGO) Todos pela Educação. Document analysis made it possible to make inferences and establish dialogue with the data presented, contributing to the results. It can be concluded that although there has been an increase in the number of young black people in high school in recent years, we still face challenges regarding the access and permanence of these young people in this stage of Basic Education schooling, among these challenges is the persistence of social asymmetries in educational institutions, such as racism.
