The degree in Exact Sciences is a degree that enables students to teach physics, chemistry or mathematics. Dropout rates in degree courses, specifically in the exact sciences, have been the subject of several investigations, seeking to understand what leads students to leave higher education and how to reduce this dropout. We sought to understand the reasons that lead students to stay on a degree course in exact sciences at a federal university in the western region of Paraná, asking: what are the reasons that lead students to stay on and complete a course in the exact sciences? What encouraged them to choose the course? We contacted all the graduates up to the year 2022 and arranged an interview, which took place remotely and was semistructured. We chose the textual discourse analysis methodology to construct new meanings about the phenomena investigated. At the end of the analysis, three categories emerged: i) factors that led students to choose the course; ii) factors that motivated them to stay on and complete the course and iii) difficulties encountered during the degree. The results indicate that the choice of the Exact Sciences degree course was due to interest in the subjects and passion for the sciences; what motivated the students to complete the degree were the friendships they made during the degree, the scholarships offered by the university and the fact that they could attend the course.
