In the last two decades, the educational historiography has been dedicated almost exclusively to the study of the State public educative subsystem. Its glance has been critical towards the insuffciencies or the authoritarianism of that system, even in times of greater effectiveness and of increasing matriculation of students. This is opposed to the predominant optimistic and non­critical vision of former researchers. This article aims to analyze the historiographic references and the units of analyses that have given rise to such visions, as well as the works that considered also a certain confessional education institutions as public ones.
