In this text is built a logic line of arguments that allows a refection about the challenges at the professionalization of professors at Brazilian’s superior education institutions. Supported by the results of a diagnose stage of a research project developed at a Superior Education Institution of the State of Minas Gerais with FAPEMIG resources, the work as university docent is characterized as a professional activity, with emphasis on the necessity of forming professors as basic condition for the professionalization of the superior magisterium. The crossing of the research data with the refection of authors and other specialists criteria permits the evaluation of the main challenges that made the execution of an educators development program in IES object of the study difficult, such as: the privacy of pedagogical practice, the exaggerated autonomy of professors in the class rooms and the fragility of institutional mechanisms.
