This paper aims to present the concept of philosophical therapy developed by Wittgenstein and discuss its undertaking in Mathematical Education. Philosophical Therapy intends to deconstruct unique images by describing all diverse uses of concepts or words in language practices, in order to clarify that these uses do not converge at a single meaning, or essence. Philosophical therapy activities within Mathematical Education intend to analyze privileged sentences or images of Mathematics which point to an essentialist representation of mathematics. A research conducted in Mathematical Education literature, focusing on how the term mathematics is being used, points to many mathematical practices such as those of school, everyday, academics, professional groups etc. These practices are described as specific ones, what means that they do not converge at an essence, but build meaning systems associated to certain contexts in which they are developed.
