Abstract

ARAUJO, Rita de Cássia Pimenta de  and  CUNHA, Marcus Vinicius da. A apropriação de Aristóteles por John Dewey. Educação e Filosofia [online]. 2011, vol.25, n.49, pp.43-70. ISSN 1982-596X.

This article analyses the relationship between John Dewey’s and Aristotle’s philosophies, adopting as reference the book Logic: the theory of inquiry. In this book, published in 1938, Dewey concludes his reflexions about logic theory, specially presented in How we think, a work that shows the relevance of this theme for education. The first part of the article is composed by a brief history of logic, since Aristotle until the early 1950s; the two subsequent parts explain the author’s arguments about Aristotelian logic; the fourth presents the theory proposed by Dewey and the last two analyses how Dewey sees Aristotle, considering the interpretative way originated from scholastic and also the contemporary movement that review the Aristotelian ideas. In order to offer contributions to future studies, the article also discusses the appropriation of Aristotle by Dewey and suggests some hypothesis about this theme.
