Resumen

COELHO, João Paulo Pereira  y  PEREIRA, José Joaquim. A educatio latina na obra de clementia de Sêneca. Educação e Filosofia [online]. 2011, vol.25, n.49, pp.99-119. ISSN 1982-596X.

The concept of clemency which Seneca developed in his On Clemency is provided and discussed. The treatise was written for Nero to help him use the virtue of mercy in the exercise of power. The Emperor would be able to fine-tune his actions with Roman society through political prudence which emanates from this virtue. Discussions in current research lead towards the understanding that, according to Seneca, clemency would be the model of wisdom to be applied by the ruler in his political activities. If he acted on this fundamental principle of good government and transformed it into a moral and ethical example, he would spread such practice to all, guaranteeing the people’s loyalty to their ruler. At the same time, albeit covertly, Seneca was also trying to made Nero avoid a tyrannical trend whose vestiges were already in the making.
