Plato’s phytourgo is not a mythical figure used to give an allegorical and unreal account of the creation of the world but a central concept of his cosmology and ontology. This paper considers it realtionship to the Forms and proposes some hypotheses about its nature apparently contradictory in the Republic (X, 596c, 597a-c).
