Abstract

CERQUEIRA, Luiz Alberto. Liberdade e modernização no Brasil. Educação e Filosofia [online]. 2013, vol.27, n.54, pp.597-629. ISSN 1982-596X.

The idea of Brazilian philosophy comes from the context of the political emancipation and the cultural modernization. By introducing the romanticism in Brazil, Gonçalves de Magalhães conceives freedom as the man’s power of creation. But his conservative conception of aesthetics has generated the need to question whether ‘beautiful’ and ‘good’, as well as ‘true’, are absolute or relative values. This questioning led to the contact with the Kantian doctrine by Tobias Barreto, who introduces the concept of freedom as a contracausal power able to transform the man into the subject of modernization.

Keywords : Philosophy; Freedom; Modernization; Nature and Culture.
