This paper is concerned with checking the terms with which Pythagoras and Plato conceived the notion of transmigration of souls, as well as ascertaining what they actually understood by soul (psychê). Regarding the latter, what is effectively in question is not the concept of soul (psychê) in a narrow sense, but how, under the notions of palingenesis and/or metempsychosis, they conceived such a concept and endowed it with meaning.
