Abstract

PAIVA, Wilson Alves de. A religião de Rousseau. Educação e Filosofia [online]. 2014, vol.28, n.55, pp.395-421. ISSN 1982-596X.

This article aims to discuss the concept of religion in the work of the Genevan thinker Jean-Jacques Rousseau, which offers a set of moral, educational, political and philosophical reflections that has little to do with theology, but includes a peculiar view of religious phenomena. Reflecting on the “state of nature” under the conditions given by the “Author of things” and the original state “without a trace of culture”, Rousseau makes clear, especially in the text of the Profession of Faith of the Savoyard Vicar, an almost metaphysical or teophysical sense of the term, approaching the reflections of Spinoza and St. Augustine. But for Rousseau, nature itself is the manifestation of divinity and therefore a source of inspiration for human feelings and the construct of morality.

Keywords : Religion; Religion and Philosophy; Rousseau; Culture; Nature.
