This paper approaches contributions of Lev Vygotsky on the use of visual aids in the learning process, examining their implications on the development of students thinking. Vygotsky analyzes are considered in the context of psychological and pedagogical debate developed in the Russian education of his time and reveal psychological foundations of his theory. The contributions of Vygotsky addressed in this paper show significant psychological and didactic discussions to think about these issues in the current educational process
