This article examines the possibility of transformation of an official document of the Catholic Church in source for research in education and culture in Brazil. The document, Acts and Decrees of the Plenary Council of Latin America (1906), comes from the effort that brought together all the Latin American bishops, and it has 998 decrees that regulate the Church shares in modernity. The priesthood, worship, threats against the faith, the Church's relations with the State and society, the church property, received new regulations, revoking the previous guidelines. Reading this document, unexplored by historiography of education, sheds light on the Church's relations with the National States and on the spaces of the clergy and laity in the expansion project of the Catholic Church. The article relied on specific studies about the event, written by theologians and church historians.
