As rector of the University of Salamanca and intellectual committed to the educational and academic reality of his country, Unamuno could not stop analysing, in his essays and newspaper articles, the Spanish university in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The present study aims to recover such reflection, especially with regard to the characteristics of the geographical and institutional context of each university, as well as the desired university autonomy.
