Abstract

BEZERRA, Gustavo Cunha. The dualism and the problem of evil in Rosseau. Educação e Filosofia [online]. 2017, vol.31, n.61, pp.169-186. ISSN 1982-596x.  https://doi.org/10.14393/REVEDFIL.issn.0102-6801.v31n61a2017-p169a186.

We present in this article two possible interpretations of the dualism expressed in the Profession of Faith of the Savoyard Vicar. One of them refers to Paul Hoffmann, pointing to the influence of Calvin’s theological thought and Ostervald. Hoffmann notes that beyond the dualism between body and soul, there is another that divides the soul, which points to the origin of evil as a result of the internal conflict of the soul. Robert Derathé, on the other hand, highlights the Platonism of Rousseau who sees evil as derived from the pursuit of satis fying material interests, while the good is identified with the satisfaction of the interests of the soul.

Keywords : Soul; Dualism; Evil; Rousseau.
