According to the legal documents that guide the Brazilian Basic Edu cation, the purpose of the discipline Philosophy is to promote an enhancement of the argumentative use of the language. This paper aims to reflect about the place of argumentation in the discipline of Philosophy in Secondary Education. It is argued that Philosophy is not restricted to the argumentative discourse, be cause it is also constitued of problematization, reflection and conceptualization. Therefore, it is necessary to think the role of argumentation in Philosophy (and in its teaching) as one of the philosophical fundaments. Despite this, it’s argued that the promotion of argumentative practices in the classroom contribute to the develop of criticality, creativity and civility.
