Abstract

SILVA, Flávia Santos da  and  CHAVES-TANNUS, Marcio. Benveniste’s interpretation about Aristotle’s categories. Educação e Filosofia [online]. 2017, vol.31, n.62, pp.1033-1054.  Epub Mar 09, 2021. ISSN 1982-596X.  https://doi.org/10.14393/revedfil.issn.0102-6801.v31n62a2017-p1033a1054.

The book Categories from Aristotle, about the study of the term and the different genres of beings, has caused a series of discussions and academic interpretations, both in Philosophy and in other disciplines related to it. Concerning this point, Émile Benveniste writes an article named “Catégories de pensée et catégories de langue” in 1958. This text was read by some specialists in the realm of Philosophy and has received some different interpretations. Among them, Lallot and Ildefonse (2002) affirm that Benveniste defends a type of linguistic determinism and Pellegrin and Crubellier (2007) say that the relation between thought and language is conceived by him in terms of grammar. In this article, we aim at analyzing both interpretations, comparing them to Aristotle’s book itself in order to discuss some problems promulgated by the tradition.

Keywords : Aristotle; Benveniste; Categories; Language; World.
