Abstract

FREITAS, Ana Beatriz Machado de. Contributions from phenomenology of perception to understand the corporeity of people with autism. Educação e Filosofia [online]. 2018, vol.32, n.65, pp.463-492.  Epub Sep 21, 2020. ISSN 1982-596X.  https://doi.org/10.14393/revedfil.issn.0102-6801.v32n65a2018-02.

This article presents a qualitative bibliographical study that sought to identify descriptions about perceptual experiences from people with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Excerpts from Temple Grandin’s publications or concerning this author were selected. Descriptions related to sensory aspects were highlighted. It was identified which sensory disorders affect the body’s self-perception as a perceptual unity in its relations with the world. In light of Merleau-Ponty’s work, Phenomenology of Perception, it discussed the importance of the proper body constitution in the quality of perceptual experiences. It called attention to the importance of the contribution of phenomenological research from the autobiographies of people with ASD, as well as the look at their bodies movements and intentionalities. Reflections are made on possibilities to increase the interactivity between autistic and non-autistic individuals, based on the understanding of perceptual differentials, and thus favor the educational inclusion of people with autism.
