This paper proposes an interpretation of the theme personal identity in the writings on the education of the young Nietzsche. Nietzsche’s thought on education is permeated by the concept of self and its counterpart, the other. Each of these concepts plays important roles in the formation of the individual and have two basic subdivisions: the other outside the individual, the other inside the individual, the self inside the individual and the self above the individual. The result is a mutable self, but not completely susceptible to education, and an otherness as tool, with which the individual strengths its own identity.
