Abstract

BOCCHETTI, Andrea. Logic and method in Lorenzo Valla. Educação e Filosofia [online]. 2018, vol.32, n.65, pp.651-663.  Epub Sep 21, 2020. ISSN 1982-596X.  https://doi.org/10.14393/revedfil.issn.0102-6801.v32n65a2018-07.

In the composite but infinitely rich panorama of Renaissance Humanism, the figure of Lorenzo Valla is canonically associated to the importance of his contribution in the literary and philological field. This semplification, however, risks to subtract from the history of thought an important contribution to the development of logic and method, which, after a long and tortuous course, led to the elaboration of logic and modern science. The structure of the Vallian reflection, which draws from an exemplary setting of the Aristotelian methodological device, dominant until the late Middle Ages, turns out to be a first step towards overcoming the Scholae contortions, in the direction of landing that will mature two centuries later with Descartes. It is not, however, a question of identifying a mere point of discontinuity in the Vallian thought, but rather of showing how the recovery of classical thought (in particular the work of Cicero and Quintilliano), and of its renewed elaboration during the Renaissance period, allowed the start of that great logical and scientific revolution that characterized and marked the transition to modernity.

Keywords : Lorenzo Valla; Humanism; Logic; Method; Anti-Aristotelianism.
