Abstract

BORGES, Paulo. Life as Dream. Rereading the Book of Disquiet in the light of “lucid dreaming” and “dream yoga”. Educação e Filosofia [online]. 2018, vol.32, n.66, pp.1335-1366.  Epub Sep 22, 2020. ISSN 1982-596X.  https://doi.org/10.14393/revedfil.issn.0102-6801.v32n66a2018-18.

One of the most characteristic themes of Fernando Pessoa’s work is the experience of life and the world as an illusion or insubstantial dream, being this way a space of creation, alteration and metamorphosis, as is particularly evident in Bernardo Soares’ Book of Disquiet. The theme has deep roots in the Western literary tradition, where it is however rejected by the mainstream philosophical tradition, in contrast to several orientations of Indigenous and Indian thought. Here we seek to reread the Book of Disquiet in this light, showing its similarities and differences with a discovery of contemporary neuroscience, the possibility of lucid dreaming, and with the dream yoga, an ancient practice of Indo-Tibetan Buddhism.

Keywords : Lucid dream; Dream yoga; Illusion; Fernando Pessoa; Indo-Tibetan Buddhism.
