Abstract

BONTEMPI JUNIOR, Bruno. Uses of the prosopography for the history of the intellectuals of education. Educação e Filosofia [online]. 2019, vol.33, n.67, pp.57-82.  Epub Aug 30, 2021. ISSN 1982-596X.  https://doi.org/10.14393/revedfil.v33n67a2019-47897.

The article discusses the potential and modes prosopography is used in research about intellectuals in the History of Education. It presents, in a bibliographic approach, its main definitions, concepts, methodological operations, and sources. In the field of the History of Education, the prosopographical methodology offers contributions for the study about the intellectuals, especially in investigations into: public petitions and signatories, whose co-signer relationship can reaffirm or subvert the logic of individual positions; the teaching collectives, their development trajectories, and their institutional and regional movements; the institutional histories, especially regarding the social and political destination of graduates, and the circulation of technical and academic staff; and associations of civil society, such as trade unions and category entities, whose staff worked in the education field. It is concluded that the use of prosopography allows the historian to extrapolate the usual individual approach of authors and ideas in education in order to integrate the intellectuals into collectives, such as professional bodies, sociability networks, and disciplinary communities, in which the relational properties and interests can reveal as many meanings as the discourses, subject matter of most research on the issue.
