The representation of education involves a systemic notion and intellectuals can function as a system. They shape and demarcate the educational field. The intellectual is a concept that can be worked as an epistemic category with educability and historicity. Intellectuals who soon perceive what is ‘new’ in crisis and what should remain. Among these emerge the Scholars. Combining the dimensions of intellectuality and educability, they are intellectuals involved institutionally and who establish the intersection between education and society, are instituting. Recognized as masters, they are, as a rule, authors of doctrinal texts and school books; have special relevance in the constitution of the school, literary, scientific and artistic canon. Nothing that is human is indifferent to them; they know how to make use of the symbolic and material power that institutional and normative power confer on them. It will be on the Scholastics that I will try to develop my text. I will take as fundamental reference the Portuguese intellectuals and the history of education in Portugal.
