Abstract

MERCAU, Horacio Héctor. Education of, by and for Democracy: the means-ends relationship in the philosophy of John Dewey. Educação e Filosofia [online]. 2019, vol.33, n.67, pp.219-241.  Epub Aug 30, 2021. ISSN 1982-596X.  https://doi.org/10.14393/revedfil.v33n67a2019-47803.

The intention of the present work is to explore the media-ends relationship by explaining that it is presented in the work of John Dewey as a coherent and consistent road and horizon of his philosophical and educational proposal. The media-ends relationship directs research leading us to an understanding of knowledge as an evaluative and transforming practice. This epistemological conception lays the foundations to rethink education and democracy and provides sufficient elements to overcome the dichotomies thought - emotion, facts - values and society - individual. The method used is investigation. Education and democracy are spaces in which the means-ends relationship, whether in its natural or adaptive phase, whether in its moral or critical phase, whether in its social or public phase, finds unity and continuity. In the education of, by and for democracy, intelligence and activity are mutually interrelated.
