Abstract

RIBEIRO, Carlos Eduardo. A preamble to the course Psychiatric power: the problem of anti-psychiatry in Foucault (or the genealogy of an a-historicity). Educação e Filosofia [online]. 2019, vol.33, n.67, pp.371-400.  Epub Aug 30, 2021. ISSN 1982-596X.  https://doi.org/10.14393/revedfil.v33n67a2019-46682.

As a preamble to the reading of Psychiatric Power, the article discusses how the question of anti-psychiatry should be the key to reading the course given by Foucault between 1973-1974 at the Collège de France. Antipsychiatry is associated with the paradox that constituted the psychiatric knowledge according to which, in seeking to determine mental illness, psychiatric power eliminated the actual suffering of the sick person. Psychiatric power would have as its most basic thesis the proposition that on the psychiatric field it is necessary to make the genealogy of this form of a-historicity. In order to do this we have turned to texts, to a certain extent, external to the course in which the theme is more specifically developed: the conference History of madness and anti-psychiatry (pronounced May 1973) and the summary of the course itself.

Keywords : Power; Genealogy; Foucault; Antipsychiatry.
