Abstract

GATTO, Alfredo. Descartes and the genealogy of modern theodicy in Leibniz and Malebranche. Educação e Filosofia [online]. 2019, vol.33, n.68, pp.721-746.  Epub Aug 30, 2021. ISSN 1982-596X.  https://doi.org/10.14393/revedfil.v33n68a2019-56628.

This article aims to analyze the reception of the Cartesian theory of the eternal truths in the works of Leibniz and Malebranche. Both authors criticized and refused the premises of Descartes’ doctrine in order to avoid the consequences they believed derived from it. The main goal is to demonstrate that we cannot fully understand their reflections without interpreting them in the light of the Cartesian theory, as it represents the critical condition of possibility of their philosophical approach.

Keywords : Modern Theodicy; Eternal Truths; Descartes; Leibniz; Malebranche.
