It is a theoretical discussion about the philosophical bases of education, the realistic and idealistic philosophies, which have been developed throughout history and have some points in common, among which we highlight two: essentialism and referentialism. The first related to knowledge and the second to language. We seek to present and discuss these points, presenting the understandings about knowledge and language of these philosophies. And then, we present the philosophy of language that developed, mainly, at the end of the 19th century, as a counterpoint to these conceptions. In this way, we discuss realism and idealism, and their consequent understandings about how knowledge is acquired, and the place of language in each of these fundamentals, and how it comes to be understood with the linguistic turn.
