Abstract

MOTTA, Romilda Costa  and  QUADROS, Silvia Cristina de Oliveira. The concept of ethnic identity in the view of higher education students. Rev. Elet. Educ. [online]. 2016, vol.10, n.2, pp.286-298. ISSN 1982-7199.  https://doi.org/10.14244/198271991540.

The aim of this paper is to present considerations about a survey performed with students from a higher education institution in the city of São Paulo, Brazil. The study aimed to characterize the students’ concept of ethno-racial identity. The methodology consisted of theoretical study in Semiotics area in order to analyze the semiotics’ construction of identity and discuss the concepts of prejudice, racism and discrimination. A questionnaire with eighteen questions has been applied to students of a higher education institution, situated in São Paulo, in order to identify their perception about their color or ethnicity. To compose the ethnic and racial profile, the criteria of self-classification was followed, which is enshrined in the anthropological literature as the most acceptable method for the definition of social and ethnic identities. After the analysis of complex identity webs found in the research, one of the issues observed in the results were some of the possible reasons for the apparent difficulties, faced by considerable segments of the black population represented, to assume themselves as being “black”. In conclusion to this study, it was verified that the diversity of ethnic-racial, cultural, social and regional orders characterizing Brazilian people is a fact. However, it is not always accepted or recognized by the ones who hold it.
