This article aims pointing out the challenges experienced by beginner teachers at initial stages of Elementary School at their work with mathematics. It also aims to identify characteristics of initial education with influence over the needs of the acquisition of knowledge and experience to teach. The methodology is qualitative and of a descriptive analytical character. It is presented reports of two teachers on the challenges of learning and teaching of mathematics in the early years of their career, as a result of a semi-structured interview. The results show that there are problems concerning to the mathematical knowledge during the initial educational course, since the program quite often describes an education centered in methodological procedures, and that do not support the necessary conceptual issues required for the pedagogical practice, which can cause challenges in professional initiation phase.
