This article looks at the use of children’s literature that is present in a context of public school and has a black child as the main character. As cultural artifacts and pedagogical tools, children’s books constitute a means of mediation and interaction in the heart of the class. The underlying hypothesis is that this literature represents and plays the role of “contemporary textbooks about civility” by considering these children’s books as crucial mediums in education, while the implementation of policies for 2003 and 2004 for the education of racial-ethnic relations. What representations of black child are being transmitted in children’s books sent by the PNBE, and how teachers are using them in class? This study is based on two complementary methodologies: collective interviews were held with teachers, and direct observations in a third grade class from primary education. It opens the discussion on the possibilities and limitations of school policies, and about these books that are being used by educators, which constitute a new education modality for the ethnic-racial diversity learning at school.
