This article aims to present an explanatory summary about the theoretical and methodological influences that Marxism exerted on the process of knowledge production in the scope of MSc dissertations of the PPGE/UFSCar, Brazil, between 1976 and 1991. The cut of the interregnum of time is directly related to the creation of the Program and to the end of the so-called “real socialism”, the greatest reference of Marxism in the existence of the “short twentieth century”. Altogether, 63 master’s dissertations were consulted, based on a previously structured reading route. The general result was that there were two tendencies of Marxism that focused more strongly on the logic of knowledge production in the Area of Fundamentals of Education of the PPGE/UFSCar: The structuralism Marxism, notably Althusserian and the interpretation that Antonio Gramsci elaborated on Marxism. The guiding thread of the research process was that centred on the principle that knowledge theory is always ultimately influenced by the societal context in which the research subject is inserted, mainly from the ideological point of view. Thus, three important events, with strong political and ideological influences, marked the period in question: The end of the military dictatorship (1985); the promulgation of the 1988 Constitution; and the political overthrow of the Soviet Union (1991). All of them had, either isolated or combined, a strong impact on Marxism used as epistemology or on the social hierarchy of research objects that should be investigated.
