In this article the author discusses the forty years of the PPGE/UFSCar distinguishing two periods in its history. The first one is the creation of the Master’s degree (1976) and the consolidation of the Program when the PhD was founded (1990), time when there were few of them in Brazil. The second period was characterized by reforms and growth of the PPGE in the context of the expansion of Post-graduation in Brazil. These periods are connected to the change in the evaluation pattern by CAPES, which directly influenced the life and configuration of the PPGE in what it is currently. The research sources used were my memoirs and handwritten notes, documents and PPGE publications, as well as others listed in the references.
