This article aims to discuss the concept of “student problem” by Joel Martins in his work entitled “O Psicólogo Escolar” (The School Psychologist), published in 1970 by the Revista de Psicologia Normal e Patológica do Instituto de Psicologia da PUC/SP (Journal of Normal and Pathological Psychology of the Psychology Institute of PUC / SP). The research, based on a historiographical methodology, focused on the analysis of the ways of seeing the child, the family and the school as well as its relations to the production of the so-called “student problem”. In a period that school psychology was limited to the classification and referral of students, Joel Martins (1970) questions the limits imposed by an eminently clinical-therapeutic vision of child and family, drawing attention to the inner aspects of school dynamics in the production of student difficulties. The main aspects related to the production of the “problem student” in the work of Joel Martins (1970) were: the role of teachers in the classroom, their perception and attitudes towards the students, the expertise and knowledge about the physical, intellectual, psychological and social development of the students, the relations between school and family and the active character of children in their participation and learning process in school. As a result, Joel Martins (1970) breaks with a pathologizing view of students differences in school, bringing an important contribution to the field of Psychology of Education.
