The article shows a research results done with primary and secondary education teachers in a special program offered by the State of São Paulo Education Department in partnership with São Paulo municipalities and universities in the state of São Paulo, Brazil, (in the case, University of São Paulo). This program aimed certifying teachers in the field of higher education. This text intends to present real research results to the learning developed in the processes of socialization of the teachers, supported by authors like Bourdoncle, Chartier, Tardif and Raymond. The focus is the teachers’ perception about the relation between theoretical and practical knowledge in the professional practice. Data were collected through interviews with three teachers, observations in the classroom and records in the field. There was a tension between practical and theoretical knowledge in several classes, but also moments in which there was recognition of their practices in the academic texts studied. As results, it was observed that the socialization promoted by the program was highlighted as fundamental by the students, because it allowed the exchange of experiences and made them perceive themselves as a professional group. This perception and the higher level diploma increased the sense of self-esteem and security of the teachers in relation to their work.
