Abstract

WEBER, Daniela Maria  and  SCHWERTNER, Suzana Feldens. Being a teacher: reflections upon training and teaching in Youngster and Adult Education. Rev. Elet. Educ. [online]. 2017, vol.11, n.3, pp.950-965. ISSN 1982-7199.  https://doi.org/10.14244/198271992017.

The purpose of this study is to learn about a sample of teachers who work in Youth and Adult Education (YAE) regarding their perceptions of teaching and training. To begin with, the article presents an outlook of the YAE constitution in Brazil and teaching in that modality from a theoretical review. Through semi-structured interviews with ten Elementary Education teachers from a Regional Education Coordination Office in the State of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, they explained why they chose that modality and remained in it, the challenges and possibilities of working in YAE. The data were analyzed in the light of Content Analysis (BARDIN, 2011). The results show teachers of different ages and teaching times. They had no knowledge of YAE at the time of their early training and learned about the modality through working with it, different to what the current Legislation instructs. They mention the difficulties they face in their practices, such as always being motivated, encouraging students, enthralling them to remain interested and involved in class. Those factors require well prepared classes and demonstrate they are concerned with learning. They recognize themselves and teachers of the modality, which is the reason to remain in the activity. By proposing to learn about this sample of teachers working in YAE, it is expected that the present study may contribute towards reflecting upon training for and teaching in the modality, which remains of great importance to effectuate the right to schooling for many Brazilians.
