MANKE, Lisiane Sias. The presence of written culture in rural areas between the 1920s and 1940s: the case of assiduous readers. Cad. Hist. Educ. [online]. 2015, vol.14, n.2, pp.651-665. Epub 06-Dez-2015. ISSN 1982-7806. https://doi.org/10.14393/che-v14n2-2015-651.
The article discusses issues related to the trajectory of assiduous readers, in order to demonstrate strategies for access and use of written culture in rural areas, especially between the 1920s and 1940s, period in which these readers had their first contacts with reading and writing. The research is based on the theoretical assumptions tied to the history of reading, studied by the historian Roger Chartier, and the concepts of reading and cultural sociology, discussed by Bernard Lahire. The analysis of individual trajectories allowed the researcher to understand that despite the difficulties of access to school, there was a strong belief in written culture, as something important to civic education. Still, the study provides visibility to the circulation of manuscripts and printed materials in rural areas as the main form of information and communication in the analyzed period, making possible to glimpse the diversity of relationships established with the written culture in rural areas.
