The reflection on the sources, uses and production conditions on the part of historians acquired greater legitimacy in recent years, thus becoming a matter compulsory for area studies. In this study, we examine one of the books-reports of the collection produced by Célestin Hippeau in the 1870s, based on two angles. The first refers to the discourses of the rapporteur, observing the structure, narrative genre and intended effects. Another approaches representations about public education in nine countries. In this set, we analyze the Argentine experience, based on questions related to freedom, gratuitousness, obligatory, secularization and hygiene schools; condition that allowed to understand the circulation and legitimization of certain models of education in the nineteenth century.
