In this paper, we present the results of a study that tried to understand the debate(s) that occurred in the United States during the first decades of the twentieth century in order to identify proposals that could characterize disciplinary standards for the teaching of Mathematics. Following Warde (2003), it was adopted for the strict purpose of this work the etymological sense of the word archetype, as a synonymous of model. We used as research source periodicals that circulated at that time in the United States and in Edward Thorndike’s authored books. It was noticed from the sources examined the existence of two proposals, one it was about an organization of contents based on the theory of mental discipline and one founded on principles of Thorndike’s connectionist psychology.
