This text has as objective to analyze the speech pronounced by Anísio Teixeira (1900-1971), at that time Rector of the University of the Federal District, in the ceremony of the inauguration of the courses in 1935. In his speech, named Universidade: mansão da liberdade, the author presents a reflection about the part of the university in the formation of the Brazilian intellectual elite. The document is historically analyzed with a discussion about the intellectual ones and their parts in the society, especially from Anísio Teixeira’s intellectual trajectory. In his speech, it is possible to glimpse a project that beyond educational is also a social project. The author considered the university as fundamental place of consolidation of the intellectual elite, responsible of assuming a leadership function in the society and disseminating a certain type of culture.
