SOCIAS-MUNOZ, Estela. John Dewey: from the point of secular humanist versus Christian humanism, according to the thought of Dr. Jaime Caiceo Escudero. Cad. Hist. Educ. [online]. 2016, vol.15, n.2, pp.658-678. ISSN 1982-7806. https://doi.org/10.14393/che-v15n2-2016-11.
Based on research conducted by Jaime Caiceo Escudero, Doctor in Education Sciences, around the pedagogical thinking in Chile in the 20th century, aims to be describe the pedagogy of the New School in Chile, country in which lived a remarkable experience, since Secular humanists of John Dewey, the ideas were introduced since the beginning of the century. You will discuss its pedagogical thinking from secular humanism, to then study the same thought from humanism Christian, in the person of father Alberto Hurtado, s.j., who argued the need to reconcile Catholicism with educational liberal modernity. The relationship between secularism and educational Catholicism, where Hurtado used the pedagogy of Dewey to help children discover the moral law, leaving clearly established the absolute value of revealed truth and that this was incompatible with the teaching of the American thinker will be observed. It will be demonstrated that antagonism in religious beliefs is not at odds on the fundamental aspects of the philosophy of education and that it is possible to be addressed since their respective approaches.
