The article examines the different configurations of the school uniforms use practices inthe period 1948-1971, in Brazil. Awakening the most diverse sentiments, intending to"clear differences" socio-economic evidenced by the clothes and trying to make "all thesame" by the requirement of a single type of clothing, school uniforms were a source ofpride, of intimidation or sign of distinction. In marked period, articles published ineducational journals evidenced the difficulties that the poorest families faced to be able tokeep their children in school due to the demands materials that were made, among them,the very requirement of uniforms. In late 1950, the São Paulo Alpargatas S. A. beganproducing footwear made of synthetic material, which were sold at prices lower thanconventional leather shoes. It stated that the initiative would solve the "problem" of thosedays of "high cost of living" standardizing "feet of the class."
