This article aims at analyzing the configuration of the teaching profession regarding to the performance of primary school teachers in the Province of Sergipe, from 1827-1838. Therefore, it was necessary to describe the performance of teachers through official letters sent to the government, pointing out the continuities and discontinuities related to teaching practices, besides identifying in the brochure "Fonte da Verdade ou Caminho para a Virtude" evidence to support its use and prohibition in primary classes in 1835. The investigative procedure has the theoretical contribution of Norbert Elias (1980, 2001) and Robert Darnton (2010) and is based on the evidentiary method by Ginzburg (1989, 2004), searching through evidences and clues to understand how the establishment process of the teaching profession took place in the space and time already mentioned.
