Theoretical and methodological reflection from experience of investigation on the academic program of History of Education in secondary school and higher education in Brazil. Concerning examination of its ideal purposes, the sources of investigation included the educational ideals conveyed in books, newspapers, and magazines; teaching legislation; news conveyed by the press in general and pedagogical publications in particular; teaching programs; teaching manuals; etc. In contrast, concerning pedagogical reality, the sources included student notebooks, school tests, iconography, school press, oral testimony, etc. The experience of investigation included, first, a detailed survey of the teaching programs and manuals of History of Education in circulation in Brazil since the time it came into effect as an academic subject, and based on this, it was possible to develop a series of attempts at interpretation of the content defined for dissemination in the discipline. In addition to this effort is another, of greater scale, in regard to examination of teaching practices of the academic discipline History of Education in specific school institutions. The conclusions of investigations undertaken indicate the central role of programs and manuals in establishing the ideal purposes of the discipline History of Education; however, the established objectives did not greatly correspond to the pedagogical reality of the discipline.
