History of education of adolescents and adults: literacy campaigns, night schools and representations of illiterate and illiteracy in Uberlandia-MG (1947-1963). Cad. Hist. Educ. This research aimed at learning about the history of education of adolescents and adults in Uberlândia-MG from 1947 to 1963, when the Education Campaign of Adolescents and Adults (CEAA) was introduced nationwide. We discuss CEAA’s history, the characteristics of night schools in the city, and representations built and published in the press on illiterate subjects and illiteracy as well. We have consulted newspapers, class diaries, enrollment books, meeting minutes of night schools and teachers registering books. CEAA produced derogatory representations of the illiterate; newspapers, in turn, emphasized those representations and increased them, since they were used as a strategy to achieve voluntaries and move companies and institutions to act in what would be a “national salvation”. In addition to those representations, the unimportance of illiterate subjects was also expressed in the precariousness of night schools.
