Public education is starts in Chile practically with the Republic in the 19th century. In that time coined the concept of teaching State -championed by the proponents of public education-, which had as its counterpart of the freedom of education by sectors linked to the Catholic Church. The 20th century begins with the influence of the New School in the country, especially in the Dewey’s thought, brought to the country by a lay representative secular, Dario Salas. The subject of this article, of historical character, is point out the secular thought present in the national awards for education in this sector and relates them to the Dewey’s pedagogy; among them is found Roberto Munizaga (1979), Luis Gómez Catalan (1983), marine Pizarro Pizarro (1987), Francisco Hernan Vera Lamperein (2001) and Hector Fernando Gutiérrez Muñoz (2005). They are important exponents of the education public in the second half of the century last in the country.
