Abstract

MONTEIRO, Lorena Madruga. Conditions of the role of Society of Jesus in training school of the Republic of elites in Brazil (1891-1930). Cad. Hist. Educ. [online]. 2017, vol.16, n.1, pp.209-234. ISSN 1982-7806.  https://doi.org/10.14393/che-V16n1-2017-14.

The Society of Jesus is remembered, both in historical analysis, as in the popular imagination, for his missionary work and education during the colonial period in Brazil. However, few studies devoted to analyzing his performance after his return to the country. This is the purpose of this study - to highlight the relationship of the Jesuits with the education of elites in the republican period. In this sense, we analyzed the conditions of the reinstatement of the Society of Jesus in Brazil, the implementation of its gymnasiums and pedagogical guidelines that broadcast based on Ratium Studiorum which produced socially homogeneous and distinct groups. It is shown, in this sense, the Jesuits sought to train the elite of the Republic in Brazil.
