Abstract

GOMES, Maria Laura Magalhães  and  REIS, Diogo Alves de Faria. Teaching to teach Arithmetics according to New Education in Minas Gerais: an investigation in Alda Lodi’s personal archive. Cad. Hist. Educ. [online]. 2017, vol.16, n.1, pp.235-257. ISSN 1982-7806.  https://doi.org/10.14393/che-V16n1-2017-15.

The article presents our interpretation of educational practices developed in the training of teachers for the early years of elementary education, with regard to mathematics, in Minas Gerais, in the 1930s and 1940s. The sources for our research were documents of Alda Lodi’s personal archive. Our analysis shows that the concepts and practices of Alda Lodi oscilated between the innovative and the traditional with respect to the teaching of methodology of arithmetic for primary teachers, in Escola de Aperfeiçoamento and Curso de Administração Escolar. In the complex combination of New Education characteristics and traditional elements used by Alda Lodi, an important role is played by Catholicism.
