Abstract

SANTOS, Emanuel José Maroco dos. The ethical-normative education of persons as the educational telos of Miguel de Unamuno’s paideia. Cad. Hist. Educ. [online]. 2017, vol.16, n.2, pp.408-433. ISSN 1982-7806.  https://doi.org/10.14393/che-v16n2-2017-6.

In this article we establish the philosophical foundations of Unamuno’s paideia and determine the anthropological-educational postulates that Unamuno proposed to the academic community in Spain at the turn of the 19th to the 20th century, and which still merit study today owing to their enduring nature and anthropological implications. We also analyse his defence of a person’s ethical-normative development as the pedagogical telos of the act of education. In doing so, we highlight in particular his proposals for developing the human faculties of sentiment, will, and imagination, as well as his pedagogical wish to develop the various dimensions of human nature, the most important of which are the individual, social, political, ethical, aesthetic and religious dimensions.

Keywords : Person; Imagination; Sentiment and Will.
