Abstract

OLIVEIRA, Terezinha. Chartularium Portugalensi: reflections on the medieval university in the fourteenth Century and politics. Cad. Hist. Educ. [online]. 2017, vol.16, n.2, pp.575-591. ISSN 1982-7806.  https://doi.org/10.14393/che-v16n2-2017-15.

Our purpose is to examine the relationship between the University of Portugal, represented by its teachers and students, and the royal authorities in the fourteenth century. The aim is to make explicit that, in the Portuguese kingdom, this institution, although founded almost a century after the universities of Paris, Bologna and Oxford, got the same privileges as these, because it had the same purpose: to promote the development of knowledge and “civility” in Portugal. To accomplish this analysis will use four letters contained in Chartularium Portugalensi, two of King Afonso IV (1291-1357) and two of his son, King Pedro I (1320-1367). Our reflections will consider the social history and the concept of memory as fundamentum for the study of letters and historiography.
