The article deals with the creation of the History of Mathematics Education as a component of the degree course in Mathematics of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS), within the scope of a curricular reform implemented in 2017. The institutionalization of the discipline is described as a confluence of three processes: the constitution of Mathematics Education in UFRGS, as a professional community and academic field; the construction of a curricular project of a teacher training course that has as its main reference the preparation for the exercise of teaching in Basic Education; resonances of the national and international movement of "History of Mathematical Education".
